Knowing where the main water shutoff is located on your property can help prevent water damage to your home or business in an emergency.

Flood: What You Can Do Right Now

With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.

  • Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
  • Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
  • Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
  • Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
  • Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.

The guys were so great!!! Carlos and his team explained everything so well. They walked us through the steps and options that lay before during and after the work. They were very flexible and easy to work with. We felt at ease with their work in our home. Would definitely recommend!!

Following a house fire, the fire chief recommended [SERVPRO of Pleasanton/Dublin](https://www.servpro.com/locations/ca/servpro-of-pleasanton-dublin), and I am incredibly grateful they did. From the very beginning, their team stepped in swiftly to secure my home, boarding up and covering the doors and windows that were broken during the fire. Carlos and Moris were on-site that critical first day and did a wonderful job helping get everything secured quickly and safely. A very special thank you goes to Carlos, who has been managing the restoration and cleaning process ever since. In the chaotic hours immediately following the fire, Carlos’s calm demeanor, reassuring attitude, and warm smile went a long way toward easing my stress and keeping me grounded. Since then, he has maintained excellent, continuous communication, keeping me updated at every step while directing his crew with utmost professionalism. The team is still actively working on cleaning and restoring my home, and the quality of their work has been top-notch throughout. I cannot thank SERVPRO enough—especially Carlos—for their dedication and care during such a difficult time. Highly recommended!

Outstanding Service and Elite Professionalism! We cannot recommend Carlos and his team at Servpro highly enough. Dealing with a sudden property water issue is incredibly stressful, but the moment Carlos arrived, we knew our home was in the best possible hands. Carlos was an absolute professional from start to finish. He went completely above and beyond to walk us through the technical details of the mitigation phase, explaining how their specialized commercial drying equipment worked, mapping out daily moisture targets, and making sure we felt fully comfortable with the entire structural process. Their setup—including a highly strategic warm air tent system directly over the critical zone—was executed flawlessly. They tracked the moisture levels meticulously every single day, keeping us constantly informed and working cleanly without creating a massive disruption in our daily schedules. Thanks to their fast action and elite expertise, our structural subfloor and framing successfully hit 100% dry standards ahead of schedule! If you want a team that is honest, deeply knowledgeable, highly respectful of your property, and delivers pristine results under tight timelines, ask for Carlos. Thank you, Servpro, for turning a chaotic home emergency into a smooth, successful resolution!

After a bathroom pipe cracked and water ran for 2–3 days while no one was home, our 2 bedrooms, bathroom, and hallway were flooded. We contacted SERVPRO for help, and we couldn’t be more impressed with the cleanup and restoration of our home. Yolanda, who manages the office, and Carlos, who manages the restoration team, were both excellent. From the start, they communicated in a timely and frequent manner, and their updates gave us real peace of mind throughout the process. Their pricing was very reasonable, and the entire team was dependable, professional, and thorough. One of the standout parts of our experience was the clear written documentation they provided and shared with our insurance. They also developed a positive working relationship with our adjuster, and because of that, we felt supported by a strong team every step of the way. We highly recommend SERVPRO for any restoration services you may need.

William Watts

We arrived home after a long weekend to find the dishwasher had malfunctioned, flooding the kitchen and leaving our hardwood floor a mess. Our insurance company said the next step was to get a flood mitigation team to assess the damage and determine needed mitigation steps. We called Servpro Pleasanton/Dublin and Carlos arrived promptly, answered our many questions, and calmed our stress levels. A preliminary report and estimate was sent the following day and Carlos continued to check in on us throughout the process. After the initial visit, SR, Luis, and Armando arrived to seal the off the affected area and set up the fans and dehumidifier. They were here almost daily for more than a week to check the moisture levels and adjusted the machines to give the best results for drying under the cabinets. They were patient with us and always answered our questions. Armando came the last day to treat and seal the area under the sink to address our last stated concerns. We cannot say enough positive things about the team at Servpro Pleasanton/Dublin and their professionalism, and respect for us, the homeowners, and our property. Thank you for your patience and understanding during a very stressful experience.

Armando and Luis did a great job, made the whole thing easy and fast, and were nice and easy to communicate with! Very happy with servpro

How to clean up flood damage in a home?

When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  • Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  • Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  • Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  • Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is a flood?

A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.

What are the most common causes of home floods?

Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.

Is flood damage covered by insurance?

Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

How long does it take to fix flood damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.

How dangerous is a flood?

Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.”

What should you do if your house floods?

The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.

Are sandbags helpful during a flood?

Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
