August 31st my cellphone's battery (Samsung S24 Ultra) got hot and started a fire in my kitchen, and set on fire my cabinets 8 inches away, that day I was notified that ServePro would come in and clean, a few day's later a project estimator (Trent) showed up to take photos and square feet. I was using my Mom's cellphone till my replacement came in. Living 20 minutes outside of town, it's not easy to do business when there's not a way to reach you. I forgot to write Trent's contact info down. Over the coming weeks I was having questions of start dates, what needed to be done to get these guy's to show up, because my house was still kind of liveable, cause I put the fire out, but had extensive smoke damage. I've seen more picky people move out for less damage. The Office staff gets a one star review, they were impossible to get a hold of, Trent told me they were out of Jackson Missouri, so I didn't know they were listed as ServePro of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties. Had to call corporate first, the Office personnel just kept saying we'll leave a message, and someone will get back with you, but nobody ever did. Tried like crazy to get a start date, Farmer's insurance adjuster was more forth coming with information than ServePro was. If it hadn't been for the insurance adjuster I'd probably still be waiting, some how I got put on the back burner. Trent told me they were two weeks out when he was here. The commercials, and advertisements all claim that ServePro is quick on the Job, and on the job within hours of incident. Don't believe that for a second. If it wasn't for Chris, Drew, and William, the 3 main personnel especially Chris, that showed up every day, was extremely courteous, polite, and knowledgeable. This company wouldn't be where it is, or get as good of review as they are getting, cause a 19 day response time to start the job is way too excessive. Their dedication to doing an amazing job, really turned this place around, and turned my view on this company around. The office staff could learn a thing or two by shadowing these guy's a few days, or at least getting a little more hands on with the projects. Chris and William's attention to detail and customer satisfaction is some of the most Top Notch work I've seen in a long time. Because I'm a renter the contents weren't cleaned, however each night I made sure stuff was out of the way for the next day's work, and they really worked with me on getting things planned, and prepared. I can't say it has been stress free, but the attitudes of the Men who showed up to work here, really made it easy to deal with. They weren't here long each day, they'd get here between 930 and 11am, take an hour for lunch, and usually leave by 330 or 4pm, but they quickly, and thoroughly worked through the house. I know they have other projects going on, so nothing to do about that. However, the house is nearly cleaner than the day I moved in, nothing on them about how it was left. I still have to repaint everything, but it definitely looks a lot better than it's been the last month, heck probably the last year. I'm excited to start the painting, and remodeling. I thought the carpets were ruined, but they got 98% of the stains out, you can still see some of the high traffic areas from 15 years of wear, but I'm shocked how good they turned out. Chris and William turned it around for the corporation, just know that the office, especially the secretaries will frustrate the dickens outta you.

Flood: What You Can Do Right Now
With flooding, knowing what you can do before help arrives can help reduce the damage to your home and cut the restoration costs. Standing water in your home will cause more damage with every passing hour.
- Get everyone in your household (including pets) away from rising water and to a safe, dry area of the home.
- Shut off your water source if you know the shutoff valve location and can reach it safely.
- Turn off your electricity at the main panel, if you can do it without stepping in water.
- Don’t use electrical appliances or outlets that might‘ve come in contact with water.
- Move your most valuable items, furniture, and electronics to higher ground if it’s safe.
- Once the flooding has stopped, take photos of the damage for your insurance claim.
What Our Customers Are Saying
SERVPRO Flood Damage Knowledge Center
How to clean up flood damage in a home?
When a flood emergency occurs in your home, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.
- Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
- Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
- Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
- Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is a flood?
A flood is an overflow of water onto property that should otherwise be dry. Water from flooding doesn’t always come from the same place, and where it comes from matters a lot. Some floods bring in fairly clean water you can begin to deal with carefully. Others carry bacteria and contaminants that can harm your health. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re up against before you start your cleanup.
What are the most common causes of home floods?
Most home floods come from severe weather and storms, plumbing or appliance failures, and sewer backups or rising groundwater. Each source carries different risks, so identifying the cause early helps you respond as effectively as possible.
Is flood damage covered by insurance?
Flood damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. Most typical homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.
How long does it take to fix flood damage?
The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. This is a closely monitored process, with our teams continually making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and as safely possible.
How dangerous is a flood?
Other than the environmental hazards, all natural flood water is classified as category 3 water damage. Category 3 water damage is defined as “Grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans.” Category 3 water damage is considered grossly contaminated. It may also be called “black water.”
What should you do if your house floods?
The most important thing to do is to move your family to safety. Next, shut off the water source and electricity if you can do so safely and avoid contact with standing water. Then call a professional water damage restoration company right away to begin the water extraction process.
Are sandbags helpful during a flood?
Sandbags are helpful for slowing and redirecting slow-moving water up to two feet deep, but they do not stop water completely. Do not rely on sandbags to counteract flood damage.
