Pontotoc is a Chickasaw word that means "Land of Hanging Grapes." Renowned outlaws Chris and Austin Gervase, along with their gang, were known to hide in an old house in the area. Pontotoc, Mississippi, is in Pontotoc County, and it was founded in the year 1836.



Local Attractions: 

The Gum Tree Museum of Art attracts visitors interested in the cultural and historical background of the region. Pontotoc Lake is a great place to hang out with friends, take in beautiful scenery, or enjoy a quiet walk. The Trace State Park offers opportunities for fishing, boating, hiking, picnicking, biking, and horseback riding. Some historical sites worth visiting are the Tupelo National Battlefield and the Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site. There will be children's activities, a petting zoo, a car show, a bicycle ride, and musical entertainment. The popular pancake breakfast at the firehouse will also return this year, with Pontotoc County's fire heroes flipping your pancake breakfast. Come hungry, because breakfast will take place both Friday and Saturday mornings, 6 a.m. until 10 a.m., both days.
