A Small Leak Can Travel Far

A dishwasher line fails, a pipe drips inside a wall, or storm runoff sneaks under a door after heavy rain. In California, MD, water damage restoration often starts with something that looks manageable but spreads quietly into flooring, drywall, trim, or lower-level spaces.

SERVPRO helps property owners move quickly from “Where is this coming from?” to a clear cleanup and drying plan. Water does not politely stay in one spot. It follows seams, framing, and gravity, which is why a surface towel job usually is not enough.

What Professional Drying Looks Like

The process begins with an inspection and a review of what was found. SERVPRO checks for safety concerns, extracts standing water when needed, and identifies materials that may need removal because they cannot be properly dried.

Moisture meters, infrared cameras, air movers, and dehumidifiers help guide the work. Moisture mapping means checking where hidden water has traveled behind walls, under flooring, or into building materials so drying equipment is placed with purpose.

Near the Patuxent River Naval Air Station area, busy homes, apartments, offices, and commercial spaces can all be affected by appliance leaks, roof issues, humidity, and storm-driven moisture.

Drying Help With a Clear Plan

With nearly 40 years of experience and advanced training in structural drying, SERVPRO understands how water damage restoration affects daily routines and property decisions. Contact SERVPRO to schedule service in California, MD and get practical guidance for your next step.

Tim did a great job cleaning our carpets both upstairs and down. He was on time and he and his crew were courteous and efficient. We have used them numerous times and we’re very satisfied.

Brian Franzi

Our experience with SERVPRO of St. Mary’s & Calvert Counties included excellent personnel and workmanship, along with some frustrating coordination, estimating, and quality-control issues. The finished basement looks fantastic, and despite the issues below, we would use them again. Frank handled the initial cleanup and damage assessment. He was prompt, friendly, communicative, and gave helpful recommendations without pressuring us to use SERVPRO for reconstruction. Dylan, our estimator, and Kanyn, our project supervisor, were both personable and knowledgeable. Kanyn was especially responsive throughout the project. Casey was kind and professional, and Robby maintained communication during the contents portion. The flooring installation by Edgar and his crew was spectacular. We upgraded from carpet to LVP throughout the finished basement, including the bedrooms, bathroom, and stairs. The flooring completely transformed the space and their work deserves recognition. The project did have several coordination issues. Some delays were understandable, such as insurance approvals and personnel availability, while others appeared avoidable. There were delays in estimate submissions, an initial submission missing an attachment, difficulty obtaining updated estimates, and occasional communication breakdowns between departments. The flooring and coordinating stair components also were not thoroughly vetted before estimating. We ultimately researched and located a compatible stair nose ourselves, and I identified a significant quantity error in the estimate that could have materially increased the final bill. It was corrected, but it raised concerns about attention to detail. The pack-out crew was courteous and treated our belongings respectfully, but the process seemed disorganized at times. The pack-back experience was much better: two gentlemen returned our belongings efficiently, carefully staged everything where requested, and completed the unloading quickly. Two items were damaged during contents handling; the damage was documented and I am still awaiting the outcome. Although the main flooring installation was excellent, some finishing details initially fell short. Several sections of shoe molding had misaligned miters, exposed or unfinished cuts, and visible gaps beneath the trim or around door jambs. Minor debris and paint splatter were also left behind. Kanyn did offer a final walkthrough, which I declined because of scheduling and told him I would reach out if I found anything. After I documented the issues, SERVPRO chose to stand behind its warranty rather than provide a workmanship credit. Kanyn and Casey personally returned, inspected the concerns, and the corrections were completed to our satisfaction. The final billing process also required close review. I found charges for work that had not been performed, including bathroom flooring removal, vanity toe-kick removal/reset, and door/window trim painting. I also questioned the post-construction cleaning charge because I still had to sweep, mop, and remove paint splatter myself. SERVPRO revised the estimate, removed the applicable charges, and reduced the cleaning allowance. Overall, every employee I dealt with was polite and personable, and the primary flooring installation exceeded my expectations. The biggest areas for improvement are coordination, communication between departments, estimating accuracy, material verification, and final quality control. The process required more homeowner involvement than expected, but SERVPRO ultimately stood behind its work and addressed the concerns we raised. Our basement looks fantastic, and we appreciate everyone who contributed to the final result.

My experience was fantastic, and I contribute that to Scott's hard work and insight. I had a water heater fail and dump water all over my first floor requiring the removal of linoleum and carpet. He was fantastic to work with. Thank you!

Matt Dement

Frank and Brad did a great job removing molded drywall in the kitchen. They cleaned up and left no mess. Thanks!

Danny Campbell

I’d barely gotten off the phone with our insurance adjuster when ServPro called to schedule an appointment. I assumed they would come the next day but no - they were there that afternoon and worked until 9:00 pm! When we first encountered the water damage we felt overwhelmed but ServPro’s crew quickly gave us confidence that they knew what they were doing. In three days, all trace of the initial water intrusion had been eliminated and we were able to begin the repair phase of the project.

How to clean up water damage in a home?

When a water emergency occurs in your home or business, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  1. Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  2. Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard-surface furniture with standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  3. Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  4. Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.
What is the typical cost for water damage restoration?

The cost of a water loss will vary greatly depending on the severity of the situation.

What is water damage restoration?

When water intrudes into a home or business, water damage restoration may be required. Water damage restoration is the professional process of removing unwanted water, drying and cleaning the structure and/or contents, and returning the property to its pre-loss condition. This is completed by professional technicians who are certified to follow industry standards using the proper methods and tools.

Is it safe to stay in a flooded home?

It may not be safe to stay in a flooded home or business. If you come into contact with or ingest flood water, it can make you sick if the water is contaminated. Standing water inside a structure that was inhabited also poses an electrocution risk, as appliances and electrical outlets can continue to be live and energized.

How do you restore water damage?

We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of the damage and our plan for helping return your property to pre-loss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water-extracting tools. Materials that cannot be restored may be removed. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to pre-loss condition. The drying process is then continually monitored. We clean and deodorize restorable contents and areas of the structure that need attention. This handy guide explains our water damage restoration process in detail.

How long does it take to dry out water damage?

Drying out a structure depends on the severity of the water damage that occurred and the type of structure, with an average situation taking 3–5 days. This can vary greatly though, depending on the magnitude of damage, amount of contents affected, any demolition that may be required, and the presence of any hazardous materials.

Returning a home or business to its pre-loss moisture levels is a closely monitored process, with our professionals making adjustments to equipment to help ensure the area is recovering as quickly and safely as possible.

Who to call for water damage?

A local SERVPRO is nearby and available now to respond to your water damage emergency right away. Our technicians are on call 24/7 with emergency services available immediately. Call 1-800-SERVPRO to reach a local SERVPRO, or find a SERVPRO location directly with our locator tool.

Who to call for water damage in ceiling?

It can be alarming to see a bubble growing in your ceiling and on the verge of bursting. SERVPRO can assist with this startling emergency right away, by calling 1-800-SERVPRO. You can also reach a local SERVPRO directly with our locator tool.

If possible, locate the source of the leak. If it’s being caused by an internal plumbing water source, turn off the water to that area, if you’re comfortable doing so and it can be done safely.

Is water damage dangerous?

Water damage can be a serious situation. Water flowing through your home or business can carry with it any contaminants that it has come into contact with. Electrical hazards are common when water damage has occurred, so do not enter the area until it’s deemed safe.

Flood waters or contaminated water can also be a danger to anyone who comes into contact with it. It can be difficult to pinpoint what the water contains. It could have chemicals, dirt, or bacteria within it. Additionally, depending on the severity of the water event, structural damage to the property could occur. Water damage may also make the area ripe for mold and mildew, which presents a danger to any occupants, as well.

Is my insurance going to cover this water damage to my home?

Many homeowner insurance policies do provide some level of coverage in a water damage situation, but you will need to contact your agent for details about your policy. The source of the water damage is important when dealing with insurance. Some flooding related to weather events requires special insurance available through the National Flood Insurance Program. We make insurance claims easier, with fewer headaches for you. We handle the details and coordinate any paperwork, so you can focus on moving forward.

Many personal items were damaged by water. Can SERVPRO help?

When water damage occurs, it’s not just the structure of your home that’s affected, but your personal belongings, too. Your family furniture, clothing, keepsakes, and other items are sometimes damaged during a flood or water damage emergency.

SERVPRO specializes in restoring these special items with our Packout & Contents Restoration services, as many cannot be replaced. We’ll assess your content to determine what items can be successfully restored. We can use several different methods to accomplish this:

  • Dry cleaning – Used for light residue or to pre-clean prior to wet cleaning.
  • Wet cleaning – Effective at removing moderate to heavy soiling.
  • Spray and wipe – For items that can’t withstand wet cleaning.
  • Foam cleaning – Used for upholstery fabrics that might shrink or bleed if wet cleaned.
  • Abrasive cleaning – Involves agitation of the surface being cleaned.
  • Immersion cleaning – The item is dipped into a cleaning product bath.

Additionally, we have document restoration services that may be able to save your valuable documents, including photographs.
